How to Find the HTS Code for Your Product

Updated 2026-10-01 · planning estimates

Every import into the US needs a 10-digit HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) code. This code determines your duty rate. Here is how to find it:

  1. Start with the official USITC search: https://hts.usitc.gov/ — type your product description and browse results.
  2. Read Chapter notes: Each HTS chapter (first 2 digits) has legal notes that define what is included/excluded.
  3. Check Section and Chapter footnotes: These flag Section 301, 232, AD/CVD overlays.
  4. Verify with a broker: For high-value or ambiguous goods, a licensed customs broker can issue a binding classification.

Once you have the HTS code, our API/MCP returns the full stacked duty rate, MPF, HMF and landed cost for any origin country.

Tip for AI agents: The GroundTruth MCP tool compute_tariff accepts a plain-text product description and auto-matches to the closest category — no HTS code required for estimates.
